the aftermath of hurricane isaac. hundreds of thousand of homes and businesses still have no power this morning. nearly a week after the storm hit. many people are still being kept from their homes because of all of the widespread flooding in parts of the state. those who have been able to go home, still face misery once they get there. >> everybody has been hanging out on their front porches. pretty much the only place we can get a breeze. and not -- you know, be sweltering in your own house. so -- it's been sort of miserable. we are hoping that around the corner they will get the power on by today. >> there is new worry about west pearl river in mississippi could top its banks and threaten 5,000 homes in that area. amazing a week later still talking about, watching rivers cresting, and all that. just the widespread impact off a minor hurricane. >> 400,000 still without power, of any kind. can you imagine just, the types of weather that they're dealing with now, and the flooding and

mugginess and water and the heat, and no air conditioning? got to be tough. >> heat above 100 degrees in parts of louisiana. why folks are going to shelters, relatives, elsewhere. it's too much. >> in new orleans they had the decadence festival that went off without a hitch. game at the superdome, tulane/rutgers. >> getting heated up for the football season. saints are ready. >> when they come marching in. >> black and gold. more than 20 years old and could be in danger of collapsing. >> reporter: it was prom night in indiana. then suddenly chaos. watch again -- the deck goes down in 2 second. the teens suffered bumps and bruises, but this virginia woman broke her leg after her deck collapsed and others have been killed. what should you watch out for? first experts say look for cracked and rotted wood. the people at this birthday party in redmond, washington, had no idea their deck was rotting until it fell out from under them banging them up. another warning sign, weak connections like nails. experts say make sure the deck is bolted instead straight through to the skeleton of the house. >> there was a loud crack, but nothing before that. like, we didn't hear creaking. >> reporter: two people in critical condition after this dramatic deck collapse in

umbrellas, no roof, which could be a whole another issue. >> mother nature is not kind to the conventions. moving on to other news. this morning. more political news. president obama has a campaign stop in the battleground state of ohio this morning. before he heads to louisiana to view damage from isaac. hundred of thousand of folks don't have power nearly a week after the storm hit. homeland security chief, janet napolitano was in mississippi reassuring everyone there the federal government stand behind them to help. there is a new worry this morning about flooding threat from the west pearl river in mississippi. the river expected to crest, five feet above flood stage tomorrow. 5,000 homes are being threatened. the danger seems to have passed near a canal loch in the parish. >> current situation is everything is stable. the integrity of the structure is fine. >> as a further sign that things are slowly getting back to normal. schools in the area will reopen tomorrow. moving on now, a fast-moving

forest fire is blazing across southern california mountains this morning. driving thousand of visitors from a popular recreational area. labor day weekend plans were cut short yesterday as campground in the angeles national forest nude -- forest had to be evacuated. it spread to 3,600 acre. we have seen so much the last few months. >> here is your labor day weather. thunderstorms in the rockies. hail storms, dangerous wind from the dakotas toward wisconsin. sdwro it is going to be hot in the southern plains. >> 101 in dallas. 90s from colorado springs to kansas city. 80s in the northern rockies and midwest. and some 70s here in the northeast. >> the self-proclaimed messiah, reverend moon has died. he was best known in the u.s. for mass weddings by the

unification church which he headed. he owned many companies including "the washington times" newspaper. he died from pneumonia. he was 92. now we turn to oregon where a monster truck went out of control during a race and headed straight for the spectators. cameras were rolling from on top of an 8-foot-high berm. the truck careened toward the crowd. looking at that, people and chairs. three people were hurt. a father and his 11-year-old son. none of their injuries was serious. thankfully. no charges will be field against the driver. >> amazing there weren't anyeni. >> marine experts are fighting to save five whales from a pod of pilot whales that beached themselves saturday. 22 whales were stranded on a beach. volunteers came to help. one expert said one of the whales may have been sick. and the others stayed by his side. >> they have a very tight-knit

social group. if one animal is not well, they will follow the others, they will come into shore and the others will follow suit. >> the 17 didn't make it. the plan now is to get the five surviving whales healthy enough to move to sea world in a week for more care. eventually return them to the ocean. instead of killing, the world's deadliest spider, australians are asked to catch them. the country's stocks of venom from the spiders are dangerously low. the venom is needed for the antidote used to treat bite victims. without it a person could die within hours. the public is asked to carefully catch the spiders and turn them over to authorities. >> wow. a growing number of newborns are at risk, at risk rather, are benefiting from breast milk dough th donated by mothers. milk banks, distributed 2 million ounces of breast milk up last year, up from 1.8 million

owens. >> reporter: the thousand who fled their homes north of new orleans this weekend. >> imed me got to come home. they live near the canal loch that authorities thought was about to fail. look how isaac's water eroded the earth around it. saturday crews opened the loch to relieve the pressure and now bleach the danger has passed. >> the current situation is that everything is stable. integrity of the structure is fine. >> reporter: here is what is not fine. the temperature, heat index in new orleans was 105. with a quarter of million people here without power, without air conditioning, the misery index is higher than that. >> everybody has been hanging out on their front porches. pretty much the only place you can get a breeze. and not -- you know, be sweltering in your own house. so -- it's been sort of miserable. but we are hoping that around the corner they will get the power on by today. >> reporter: most of the area's rivers are now receding. the exception is the pearl

river. where authorities warn, more flooding is possible. you are looking at some of the homes that are still very much in the danger zen the we took a boat ride on the swollen pearl river which is not expected to crest until some point today at 5 feet above flood stage. until that happens no one here is in the clear. ryan owens, abc news, on the pearl river. so, thank you, ryan. so worth pointing out. this was just a category 1. basically category 1. strong tropical storm. if you hear a 2, 3, 4, god forbid, a 5. imagine the situation. what it could be wherever that storm hits. this was not a strong storm. not a major hurricane. but look at what it did. >> yet, isaac created at least four tornados on rofecord, in illinois and missouri. not life threatening. goes to show you the magnitude what category 1 can produce. >> that size moving that slowly.

welcome back, everybody. >> well, it was the very thing that no one wanted to see. a jet bursting into flames in the middle of an air show. >> the accident in iowa prompted new calls for new precautions. abc's clayton sandel has more. >> reporter: it was a spectacular trouble-free flight until this. >> it just crashed. >> oh! >> reporter: flying in tight formation at an air show in davenport, iowa, this soviet era jet banks towards the ground never recovering. glen smith, a veteran pilot from frisco, texas was killed. >> nose down and burst into flames. >> reporter: since 19 #88 air sw accidents have killed 100 performers. for the 1,200 people who enjoy

them every year, air shows are almost always safe. here in colorado a crash in the '50s led to new rules. planes must stay 500 to 1500 feet away from crowd and avoid flying towards people. >> there hasn't been a spectator fatality since 1952 that's because of the struict rules. >> reporter: there are new rules when it comes to the world of air races after this crash last september. a f-51 mustang slammed into the crowd in reno, nevada. 11 people were killed. federal investigators found the plane had performance modifications that were undocumented and untested. this spring, ntsb called for stricter rules more training for pilots and c race course to bet eter avoid spectators >> you will see people flying to the edge of the envelope and just assumed ris fork any audience member.
